The sights & sounds of the letter "H" for beginning readers

For young kids named Helen who love to see their names in the title of books they can actually read, "Helen at Home and the Letter H" should be a treat. This is the eighth volume in the "Alphabet Friends" series by Cynthia Klingle and Robert B. Noyed, where each 24-page volume is devoted to a single letter of the alphabet. The primary goal is to help beginning readers with mastering letter recognition by providing them with a fun approach to the matter. "Helen at Home and the Letter H" tells of a young girl named Helen who has the house to herself and spends her day keeping busy with things that usually begin with the letter "h." Each page of text, which is opposite a color photograph, usually finds the words beginning with the letter "h" such as "Helen" and "house" highlighted and with rebus drawings above the text. However, not all of the examples of words beginning with the letter "h" are highlighted so eager young readers can have fun finding each and every example on their own with the help of parents or older siblings. The ultimate goal is for young readers to be able to read these books for themselves, so at the start of the book Klingel and Noyed show the difference between a capital "H" and a lowercase "h." They also show how the letter can come at the beginning of words like "hand," in the middle of words like "feather," or at the end of words like "fish." You will find three columns of such words in the back of the book along with Fun Facts about hair, hamsters, and horns and suggested books for this age level where young kids can go To Read More. This book is well suited to its task, even if you name is something other than Helen or even begins with a letter other than "h."
