Hebrews A Commentary on the New Testament

More than thirty years had passed since Jesus died on the cross, rose from the dead, and left behind an empty tomb. More than three decades had also passed since the Holy Spirit fell on those gathered in the Upper Room, fulfilling the Promise of the Father. Yet by A.D. 63-64, persecution against Christians was intensifying, and the fires of Pentecost seemed to be fading. The destruction of the Jerusalem temple was only a few years away (A.D. 70), and the years leading up to it were marked by growing hardship. Many believers, particularly the Hebrew Christians who had once embraced Jesus as the promised Messiah, found themselves tempted to return to the familiar rituals of the Old Covenant, including the sacrifices prescribed under the Law. In the midst of this pressure, the writer of Hebrews urged them not to drift away, harden their hearts, or abandon their faith, but instead to press on toward spiritual maturity, embrace sound doctrine, persevere through suffering, and hold fast to their confession of Christ.

Jesus is sitting at the Father's right hand and flowing out from Him is the mighty River of God. Can you hear Jesus saying again, as He has through the ages, "If any one is thirsty let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me out of his belly will flow rivers of Living Water"?
