In the spring of 1967, Chuck Moorman is a shy, overweight, and nerdy 16-year-old. He wants to be a Top-40 DJ "in the worst way." He also wants a job, a car, and a girlfriend. Thanks to some lucky breaks, he not only gets a job and a car, but also falls under the guidance of local DJ Ray Waters. Thanks to Ray and his own fortitude, he gets an opportunity to have a weekend rock and roll show on Ray's station, KMFR.

But Chuck has a past of public ridicule, thanks to his weight and nerdiness. To hide the fact that it's really him on the air he creates the pseudonym of "Gary Arizona." It's a great idea, and he's a hit Chuck basks in "his" popularity, and wonders if his secret identity is still a good idea. Then, his dream girl suggests she's attracted to the new DJ, forcing Chuck to come up with a plan to reveal his secret and win her over.
