"...Heart Land wears the triple crown of literary genius: it is profound, beautiful and arresting from the first page..." -Writerface.com, the online social network for writers & literary agents. Book... This description may be from another edition of this product.
Heart Land is a beautifully written collection of stories about a young boy growing up in the midwest. Caroline Miller's writing evokes an innocence that seems to be lost in most of today's novels. Heart Land is on my gift-giving list for the year.
Summer Reading--A Must
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 16 years ago
Have you started your summer reading list yet? When you do, don't forget this fresh look at our American Way. Heart Land, Caroline Miller's lovable story about a small Ohio village circa 1939-40, is a place you have to go, especially if you haven't and--more especially, if you have-- grown up in a small town (like mine) where everyone's mother was watching out for you, your sibling was always tattling on you and your mom's unmarried uncle was your live-in babysitter. If only my Uncle could have been as much fun as Oliver and Herman's Uncle Henry. While Henry dances in tap shoes in front of the house and makes certain both Oliver and his brother are properly educated and amused when he's in charge of them, my uncle only taught us Table Manners! And then there's Bodacious Scurvy! Who wouldn't love a cat with such a name to come slinking into your backyard. Heartland is a Special Read for everyone over 12 and a Must Read for anyone over 40.
Heartfelt characters

This beaufifully written story provoked lots of personal memories from that period. The characters were delightful and so fully developed that I found myself laughing out loud at least a dozen time. This is a "must read" feel good book!

A lovely book. The author creates a picture of middle America from the point of view of a young boy with such authenticity you'd think she'd really lived the experiences described. Poignant and humorous and highly recommended to adult and teen readers.
simple values, complicated truths
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 16 years ago
Caroline Miller has a brilliant way of creating the voice of a 12 year old boy. This collection of heart warming scenes shows a timeless perspective of small community America to world events in 1939 where simple values are learned and the truth is sometimes more complicated. This was a delightful read. It also had me laughing out loud a lot.
