This sequel to my novel Young Spirits is an historical fiction, young adult, and middle grade novel that takes place soon after the American Civil War. It is a tough but surprisingly uplifting story of Josie's fight against prejudice against not only her youth but her work in the military medical field and midwifery. Josie (19) and Aksel (15) had grown up too fast with the loss of their mother at a very young age and their father being lost to the Confederate Army. They survived two years of battles with PTSD nightmares plus the guilt of never finding their father. During the war they wintered with southern and northern families who both wanted them to stay permanently. When the war was over, they headed their pony cart home to their Tennessee step-family where they coped with postwar southern life. The kids helped anyone suffering from wounds and war trauma without regard to what side they were on. Josie apprenticed with an old midwife and also became the local schoolmarm when the teacher suddenly marries her fianc? who shows up two years after the war ended. They were summoned to try to save the leg of their Pennsylvania Dutch Sergeant friend. On the way home, they are detained by the Union Army and find their old friend General Doctor Scott who offers Josie the opportunity to attend his Army Surgeon School. The kids learn more about upper class propriety and European Royalty than they could ever have imagined. Intrigue and encounters with Pinkerton's Secret Service become part of her life.
