Hawaii is a chain of islands that formed in the Pacific Ocean due to volcanic activity. The Pacific Plate moves very slowly over a hot spot in Earth's mantle. This caused a string of islands known as an archipelago to form. Over the course of many centuries, one island would form over the hot spot, but the plate would move, allowing a new island to form.
