An intriguing first novel

The reader will enjoy this novel for its intriguing tale that is both moving and shocking. Lara evolves and in the process also unravels some of the horrors of the Castro regime.

A fine first novel with an interesting setting

Teresa Bevin's novel is an ambitious and moving treatment of one woman, Lara's, return to the much-changed country of her birth. For those unfamiliar with today's Cuba, the book provides a fascinating glimpse at the hardship and struggles of life on the island. The story contains elements of magical realism, but Bevin's book reads more like memoir than fiction. Although the plot is not well-defined, you come to the end of the book caring deeply about Lara and the friends she leaves behind.

Touching, Humorous & Full of Insights on Cuba Today

"Havana Split" by Teresa Bevin is truly a most refreshing change of pace novel that brings the reality of modern-day Cuba into a human focus. Bevin's treatment of the main character's (Lara's) trek back to Cuba from the US to re-discover what she suppressed after fleeing her country is sincere but not maudlin and gives what seems to be a realistic portrayal of the Cuban people and culture--past and present--without resorting to political rhetoric from any angle. I feel like I've walked the streets of Havana without ever having been there, and I want to go back!Give me a sequel!
