Due to the global pandemic of Covid-19, 13-year-old Hattie has been sent to live with her grandmother on a Montana cattle ranch. Her grandmother's one remaining horse, a buckskin quarter horse, well trained and gentle, is Hattie's to ride, to use as a 4-H project, and for competing in Barrel racing-if restrictions are ever lifted and the fair opens again. Living through a health crisis in the country, isn't as bad as it would be living with her parents, both doctors, in a busy city where cases are surging. For Hattie, the only drawback is that her cousins won't be coming to spend a month in the summer as usual. Meanwhile, Hattie discovers a runaway boy hiding in their barn, and promises not to tell on him, a promise that causes her great anxiety, as she smuggles food to him to keep him alive. And then her cousins do come, because their mother, a naturalized citizen from Mexico is deported due to mistaken identity and their father, Hattie's half-Mexican Uncle tries to find her and bring her back. Hattie's cousin discovers the runaway, but before Hattie can explain and bring him to her grandmother, he disappears, along with Hattie's horse. Many more adventures with school, friends, Covid infection, and more keep the pages turning.
