Book Overview

A special new edition in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the publication of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, with a stunning new cover illustration by Caldecott Medalist Brian Selznick. Harry Potter has never been the star of a Quidditch team, scoring points while riding a broom far above the ground. He knows no spells, has never helped to hatch a dragon, and has never worn a cloak of invisibility. All he knows is a miserable life with the Dursleys, his horrible aunt and uncle, and their abominable son, Dudley - a great big swollen spoiled bully. Harry's room is a tiny closet at the foot of the stairs, and he hasn't had a birthday party in eleven years. But all that is about to change when a mysterious letter arrives by owl messenger: a letter with an invitation to an incredible place that Harry - and anyone who reads about him - will find unforgettable.

Ordered a very good condition but it does not look like it.

I ordered this book to replace the ones that I lost and I ordered a very good condition but the one I received is in poor condition, no book cover and has damage in the corners of the book. I would say it is more like a poor but acceptable condition but no where near very good condition.

The book that started it all.

This is the first of a seven-book series about the school and life of the now-famous character Harry Potter. This is an ongoing story of a young wizard and his pals coming of age, and his adventures in learning how to deal with people and situations that become more of a challenge as he advances through age. This first book is lighter-hearted as Harry is still young and sees the world in black and white, with true heroes and those that must not be named. The book can stand alone; however, the story really spans seven books, and as Harry grows up, the world is no longer black and white but murky yet thrilling. There is a lot more depth and research that went into this series than the superficial story that holds it together. You may want to pick up some of the supplementary books, and the one describing where J. K. Rowling picked up the background information. What I found to be fun is to collect different covers of the book. One of my favorites is the Paperback from England that shows a real train instead of the comic train version. If you are really adventurous, the book has been translated into several languages, including Latin.

Not "very good condition"

The book spine is peeling and about to come a part certainly not "very good condition". With some glue I should be able to repair it, otherwise the rest of the book is in good condition.

Perfect condition!

Rounding out my collection with the original hardbacks. Smelled new, perfect condition!

I never received this book

Never got

I was excited to read the Harry Potter books in Spanish.

A few weeks ago I found out about this store and went in to check it out. I noticed they had a Spanish section where the entire Harry Potter book series was in Spanish. I was thrilled and bought all 7 of them. To my surprise, when they arrived home, they were in English. In total, I bought 10 books, all in Spanish. It was my birthday present, and it turns out that customer service tells me they can't do anything because, according to them, they sent the correct items.

Poor condition.

I ordered it in Very Good Condition and the copy I received has water damage on the back and a page has a huge rip. Such a shame.

Got it

Received Philosopher’s Stone

i LOVE harry potter

i’ve watched and rewatched all of the harry potter movies so i was very excited to make this purchase. the book overall is good no writing in it, it’s a bit dirty but nothing i can’t handle. overall the book is in good condition just missing the dust cover as mentioned.

I was looking forward to placing in my collection but no cover!!!

I paid for a "very good" condition hardcover book and was sent the book without a cover... I am very disappointed for being a first time customer!!

A great read

I tried reading the Harry Potter books when I was in 6 grade but didn't read enough of it to get fully hooked. Soon after I discovered the movies and chose to see the movies instead. As an adult, I appreciate books a lot more than I did back in 6 grade so I decided to begin reading the books. I am so glad I did because I absolutely loved it! I hated walking away from it any time I had to tend to my responsibilities. I understand certain things from the movie better and loved comparing the two; what was changed and what was kept. If you're like me and have only seen the movies, I recommend reading the books!

Book did not arrive as described. Missing the dust cover. Nowhere in the description was this stated

This is great book for all ages.

Book is okay.

Good light read for adults.

My son’s favorite of all!

We adore Harry Potter because it sparks my son's imagination. It keeps him engaged for most of the day.

Good condition

It came in good condition

Perfect

It came very fast and it looks almost like new

Great job!

Book as advertised My daughter loves it Thank you!

First time read.

Had seen all the films and decided to read the series. I like the little details of Harry's life so far and how he is becoming a more confident self. Like how Hogwarts is described. Dislike would be Draco Malfoy,.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Harry Potter is not a normal boy. He lives with the Dursley family after the deaths of his parents, Lily and James Potter. When he turns 11, he gets a letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. When he meets Ron Weasley, and Hermoine Granger, and the Groundskeeper, Rubeus Hagrid, they become friends. During the first year, they fight a troll, and they form enemies, like Draco Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle. Soon Harry finds out that not all wizards are good; some are evil. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is a children's fantasy classic by British author J K Rowling. Read the novel, before seeing the movies.

Was Captivated from the first page.

This started a craze for Harry Potter through my entire family. Excellent story that leaves you excited for the next book.

perfect

very good quality

I have it already; great book 5 stars.

fantastic stories...

nice book and interesting stories..

More exciting to read as mother language!!

Of course, JKR's first book was the most eye-widening book among the 5 books (up till now) and it's more exciting to read in mother language as it takes time for a chinese to read an english book. (I guess there's no need for me to explain the greatness of the Rowling books) So lets go back to the translation. It's nice (but not great) as this edition is translated by Taiwanese which use lots of slang language which other Chinese-speaking people do not understand. So, personally, I would suggest the Simplied Chinese editon for nicer translation.

Wonderful Book!

The world of Harry Potter is magical and enthralling in any language. Many reviewers have criticized the omissions in translation. It should be noted that an accurate and interesting book cannot be translated to another language verbatim. Many bits of humor would be lost in unnatural descriptions. Instead, the translator appended when needed to make a sound linguistic and cultural switch. Enjoyable for Francophones and native english-speakers with good french reading abilities.

Viel Spass!

I read this in German before reading it in English. It's a lot of fun in both languages. In fact, it's great for improving one's skills in another tongue, because it's so enjoyable, you'll keep on reading. Taught me a lot of words that my German teachers never bothered with.
