Thirty-year-old John Balwin has just lost his beloved fianc e to cancer, and he decides it is time to leave New York City, the only home he has ever known. He will take a thirty-day trip across the United States to start a fresh new life in San Francisco, California, where a new job and, perhaps, a new love awaits him. The only thing left to do is to say good-bye to his beloved city, and he decides on a last visit to Central Park.
There he meets a woman who will change his life forever-seventy-two-year-old Harriet Dinsmore. He agrees to bring her along on his cross-country trek, and their journey begins. Along the way, the pair pick up two more senior women, and together the four continue westward, transforming from a band of strangers into a family.
But along the way, Harriet is plagued by visions of the dead-such as Civil War soldiers at Gettysburg. One apparition in particular begins to haunt Harriet over and over again. A woman is beckoning to her, calling for Harriet to join her in the spirit realm.
Could the woman be an omen that Harriet is not long for this world?
