I read Dan Misiaszek's book "Hardened Hearts", and I gave it 5 stars. Here's why. Imagine you're reading a great novel about adventure, heart stopping actions and wild chases, water rescues and daring dives, peppered with behind-the-scenes insight and info about jobs in 'public service' like fire fighters, police officers etc. , things you usually don't see in a movie or know about. And then you suddenly realize that the amazing story this book tells is not just a fabrication of the mind, but instead the sum of 30 years living that life, for real!! Reading this book makes you "see" what the author is experiencing, you're there. You feel with him the adrenaline pumping through his body, and you want to weep when he bares his soul and honestly shares the disappointments, doubts, and disillusions that tear him apart despite his sincere wish to serve his fellow men. And it also makes you smile and you want to cheer him on, him and his wife Kathy. This is an honest book, sometimes brutally honest, a book that held me in its grip once I started reading, and it did not let me go. A real story written by a real person. An amazing story.
A lifelong endeavor to satisfy an inner voice

This book is a good read. Puts some perspective into why people work in public service, and in the opening enthusiasm, why there are so many people in this country that work as volunteer firefighters. Dan takes that enthusiasm for excitement and helping the public through his trials and tribulations that eventually go beyond public service and enter the realm of just getting the job done for the personal reason of that is what people, and himself, expects. He demonstrated the self awareness to know when it was time to get out and move on to other endeavors. Massive kudo's to his wife Kathy who was right there through so much of it. The world would be a far worse place without people like Dan and Kathy.
Hardened Hearts by Daniel Misiaszek

I have read "Hardened Hearts" by Daniel Misiaszek and I am now ordering more copies to share with my friends. This is without a doubt the best non-fiction book I have ever read. It covers 30 years of his life in public service, hitting the most memorable episodes with stark realism and a sense of immediacy as though you are there. It is honest (sometimes painfully so),full of insider information, details on topics you would never know about unless you were there. I'm sure that it will be on "Best Seller" lists all over the country, and I fully expect it to be turned into a movie soon. There are places in the book that, even knowing he survived to write about it, you are frightened for him and holding your breath as the story unwinds. If you like exciting adventure and breathless suspense, this is a book for you. If you only buy one book this year.....make it this one. You won't regret it.
