Happy Hour: Makes You Cry , but Wonderful!

We use Happy Hour in Adult Reading Programs and it has always been a good title for us. It is an interesting story, well-written, with characters who come to life. Even though it was written to be an easy-to-read novel, it still has punch and I'd say almost any grownup would enjoy it.

Our reader from San Luis Obispo missed the point!

It is apparent that the reader from San Luis Obispo did not read the book in the context it was written in. This is a book for late readers who don't want to read The Pokey Puppy. This book offers entertainment for beginning adult readers and books of the sort are far and few between.

Happy Hour isn't fun, but it's very good.

Happy Hour, by Thomas Ogren, is another of the New Readers Press Books, designed as serious adult fiction, but written at a reading level that will be easily understood by "new readers" who are adults. One of the people who reviewed this said it was a lousy children's story, but he missed the point. Happy Hour is about adults, has adult themes, and was never intended for kids. Pretty much the story is about one man's battle with alcohol...a fight that almost ruins him. Actually for those who take the time to read this little novella, I think most will find it a very well written, powerful and in the end, uplifting story of one man's war with personal demons. This book has been used in our area in adult reading programs and it has always been one of our most popular titles. John Banks

A good book for any adult new reader.

Happy Hour is an interesting story about a hard-drinking landscaper. Written to be easily read by adults who are trying to improve their reading skills, Happy Hour is never condescending. I think it's a great tool for any adult who is having trouble reading more complicated novels, but who at the same time, doesn't want to read any "kid's stuff.' Check it out.
