Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates / Illustrated Junior Library

Written in 1860 by Mary Mapes Dodge, the story of Hans Brinker is a true classic. This is a tale of a family sticking together through hardship, and of wishes granted just in the nick of time. The race to win the silver skates is well-known, but the mystery of the watch and the missing riches is equally enticing. This is the best kind of fairy tale, and kids will be riveted by its drama. For the winter holidays or anytime, this is a book to cherish. This beautiful edition was published by the Grosset & Dunlap Illustrated Junior Library in 1945. Mary Mapes Dodge (1831 - 1905) was an American children's writer and editor but is best known for this book. In 1859 she began writing and editing, working with her father to publish two magazines, the Working Farmer and the United States Journal. Dodge then wrote Hans Brinker, or the Silver Skates, which became an instant bestseller. She was an associate editor of Hearth and Home, edited by Harriet Beecher Stowe. She then edited the children's St. Nicholas magazine which became one of the most successful magazines for children during the second half of the nineteenth century. This edition was illustrated by Cyrus Leroy Baldridge (1889 - 1977), a famous artist, illustrator, author and adventurer. Baldridge's career in art began when the 10-year-old Cyrus was accepted as the youngest student Frank Holme's Chicago School of Illustration. Cyrus Baldridge was not only an artist but a deeply committed citizen. World War I changed him greatly and made him a committed pacifist until Hitler came on the scene. He was a socialist, a close friend and supporter of Norman Thomas. In the 1940s, Cyrus Baldridge illustrated more than one hundred books and magazine articles and, in 1947, he wrote an autobiography: Time and Chance. The book is both splendidly written and lavishly illustrated. It was quite successful, being listed on the New York Times best seller list for months.
