A young German boy becomes a member of the Hitler youth and then a Nazi soldier with no option but to perform the atrocities expected of him. The story begins in Moscow in 1991 during the August coup. Hannes is sixty-seven. "I have seen this before," he says as the first chapter ends. In the second chapter we are back to 1937 when Klar is thirteen...watching Hitler's menacing tanks on parade. As a paratrooper Hannes has to perform multiple killings. He is injured, becomes a POW, escapes, looses his parents, his best friends, his lover. He sees Dachau and later marries a Jewish nurse who has escaped. His travels take him to Scotland, America, and finally to Russia where we catch up with him in the last chapter. Throughout the reader is keen to know more of this highly moving text...exceptional and clever...intermingled with concise yet incredibly detailed historical facts. Porter is a genius of characterization...which gives the reader insight into lesser known facts and figures from 1937 to 1991. I do not give anything away when indicating that Hannes Klar's story proves that no one nationality is all good or all bad. Ingenious converstion, accuracy and feeling, together with a deep knowledge of the subject matter makes one sense the idiocy of the turmoil in the world today. I cannot recommend this book too highly. It must surely rank on an all time best seller list."

New perspective on an old subject.

Hannes Klar by Steven Porter gives the reader a look at World War II from a different perspective. The book takes the reader through the life of German soldier, Hannes Klar. In many ways it answers the question of why average German citizens didn't "know" or report information about concentration camps. Well worth the read.
