Homuncuus knows the power of words. After all, it was a word that gave him life. Preoccupied with increasing his vocabulary, Homunculus takes words from people, and Hannah is no exception. And the morning after Homunculus takes Hannah's NO, she cannot turn down her father's suggestion of oatmeal for breakfast. "Flabbergasted, her mouth hung open so wide she looked like a flounder. Delighted her father plopped a heaping bowl of oatmeal in front of her. He'd never seen his daughter so easily swayed ". Kathryn Darnell's intricate illustrations coupled with Kurt Hassler's fun loving text provide a delighful surprise for all children.
We checked this book out from the library while on vacation and it became a favorite. All three of my children, ages 10, 7, and almost 4 loved it. I think it was because the little girl in the story is not weak, but very strongwilled and forceful. It was fun for me to read because the dialogue is very animated.
