Readers of the previous book Taking Off were advised that it was largely about such growth issues as awareness and judgment. The story had its risky and dangerous moments, but chose to find a way through the chanciest difficulties without a horrible catastrophe. That tale, while based on a memoir, was nevertheless fictionalized.Hanging It Out deliberately avoids hiding behind fantasy and imagination. Some of our biggest blunders in life can be blamed on Jung's Hero archetype, that unconscious energy source whose zeal urges us to rescue. But another less laudatory archetype in this psychology is called The Trickster, one of whose chief features is that of deception. We sometimes merely call it putting our best foot forward, but this may translate to concealment of our failures. We keep them from others and soften them for ourselves. Some of the mistakes we make in life are bigger by far than we could wish and we plod ahead praying, sometimes desperately, that we won't repeat them.
