Karen Meyers Stangl believes the best way for children to learn to read is to teach decoding skills in the context of meaningful learning experiences. To help teachers achieve this, she's put together activities for pre-readers, emerging readers, and developing readers. For every letter of the alphabet there are dozens of pre-reading activities that include a tactile introduction to each letter, writing exercises, games, as well as links to math, science, social studies, art, phys ed, and music. For emergent and developing readers you'll find sorting and manipulative activities, puzzles and games, and independent activity task cards. Several lists of children's books is included to help teachers choose authentic literature to reinforce sound awareness- from alphabet books to poetry anthologies.
Hands-On Phonics Activities for Elementary Children

I have had this book for over 4 years now and have used it with children from kindergarten through 2nd grade. I have manipulated the large picture pages to include handwriting lines for the children to practice writing their letters. The students consistently love the pictures that accompany each letter of the alphabet. There are word lists including: short and long vowel sounds, digraphs, blends, initial and ending consonants, silent 'e' endings, etc. This book is a keeper.

A teacher at school had this book and I decided I had to have it too. I am an occupational therapist. We work together with special ed students who are having difficulty learning to read and write at the k-1-2 level. This book contains the wide variety of multisensory activities needed to grab the attention and enable understanding for these students. Activities like this make learning fun and interesting for all of us.
