This book can take a novice to a professional in a relatively short space of time. Anyone who is interested in producing music electronically and considers midi to be the most agreeable format should seriously invest in this book. The author gives analogies of real-live performed music and the re-creation of this sound through the midi medium. The chapters deal with individual instruments that are common to most tracks heard in genre's of rock, disco, house and blues. Each chapter is 'ear-marked' with tips and tricks and amusing anecdotes which enthuse the reader/learner into delving further into more complex operations. The author really understands the potential of midi to create awesome pieces of music, and gives good examples, which can be written by the user into a sequencer. For the generation of budding producers who write using samples and are maybe put off by the illusional complexity of midi, I would ask them to add this book to their collection. Once you read and experiment with simple sequence patterns, you will open up a diverse array of options outside the realms of wav files. In addition to the teaching this book offers, it presents an excellent reference medium to persons who already have a good understanding of midi music
