Marsha Mathews' Hallelujah: Voices from the Hollow is a collection of narrative poems that tell stories in the voices of churchgoing folk from Southern Appalachia, people the author knew or could have known during her time serving as a "lady pastor" in the '90s. Her recurring character "Pastor Janet," who narrates many of these poems, is regarded at first with suspicion but ultimately gains the confidence of her parishioners by listening to their voices as they reveal pivotal incidents in their lives, some wrenching, some inspiring, some funny. The voices have in common a directness and an authenticity that attest to the author's affection and admiration for the people of southwest Virginia.
