Book Overview

In one's life there are many a twilight between the one in the beginning and the end. As I see the twilight in the end appearing nearer, I sit back and wonder about the twilight that have gone by... like the early childhood, first few days of school, first brush with the concept of love, first month of the first job, first few days (and of course nights) of the married life, moments of holding the first new born... and so on... In many ways you are a fresher many times over in life. But no one addresses you as one. You feel like a fresher and get over the feeling soon. Except one twilight zone of life called the first year of college... especially during my times...You live in one environment called a family for a long time in the company of near and dear ones always available in times of crisis. Then one day you move into a different environment, alone. You are a 'fresher' in this new environment and the most important skill that you need now is the skill of communicating effectively, through conversation and body language. Your acceptance by those who came to inhabit this environment before you did depends entirely on your attitude. But unfortunately the attitude that you carry around is what you are brought up with, in your old environment. Throw this attitude around, without caution and you are inviting trouble. In a family a 'fresher' is doted upon by everyone. A baby is loved, pampered, coddled and played with by one and all in the family. As the baby grows and starts showing signs of acquiring an attitude, if it is not acceptable to the members of the family, training begins to weed out the seed of the attitude, and to replace it with a more acceptable behavior pattern.Well, ragging, like charity, begins at home This ragging is not brutal, but soft, cajoling, persuading in the beginning... 'acche bacche aisa nahin karte...'As the child grows without showing any signs of change, the nature of ragging changes... rising decibel levels, exasperating expressions... 'WHY can't you listen... WHAT is wrong with YOU...', ending in mild form of physical punishment in the beginning, leading to more rigorous forms over the years. The unintentional ragging in the family is for the supposed good of the child. The end result depends entirely on the psyche of the child and the way the child's personality blooms. Parents, siblings, relatives and friends, all play a role of the 'senior' towards this fresher in life...But the twilight of life called the first year of college is different... an experience most unforgettable for anyone who has lived it. What follows here is an account of one such life and times... when I heard with dread daily, the call... 'Oye Fresher... Come Here '
