This is a well written and well researched account of possible Hakka (i.e. 'Guest People') origins. Professor Kiang begins with the startling assertion that the Hakkas - although of a Chinese ethnicity today - were infact of Hunnish (i.e. possible Caucasian) origins. This is an importnat academic step forward for all those Hakkas and Hakka academics who have observed that many Hakka people today share various Caucasian traits such as eyebrow ridges, the double eyelid, square jaw, blond strands of hair and unusual height and build. Professor Kiang suggests that the 'Han' used to describe the majority Chinese ethnicity today may well have evolved from the word 'Hon' (i.e. 'Hun'), and originally referred only to the Hakka people. This book is refreshing, open-minded and very much needed.
