A movie about a time 10 years earlier and a different era.

This movie is based on a play that ran a decade earlier, on Broadway at the Biltmore Theatre on April 29, 1968, and as with any adaptation, things are added and removed, including songs. It had to be adapted for the big screen. I am sorry that I missed the play; it does not look like it is going to make a comeback anytime soon.
Be assured that this is a musical, and there is more music than conversation. Many of the songs are just filler. However, many of the songs advanced to become stand-alone successes.
The basic story is about a boy, Claude (John Savage) from Oklahoma, before joining the Army, he is spending his last couple of days in N.Y. City. There he is, enlightened, horsing around, and he makes friends. This leads to many situations. And keep in mind that all this is done through songs.
The last part of the film, which was not a part of the play, is dramatic as the songs “Air” as they enter a plane, eventually going to Vietnam, and "Let the Sunshine In" as the final results.
I had the opportunity to enter one of those planes. They made us carry our duffel bags over our heads, and when the tail closed, they said we could sit. It was on my way from Cam Ranh Bay to Pleiku. I came back in 1968.
