Word-pictures are complemented by charming illustrations in this unique introduction to haiku. This collection includes classic haiku poems written by Japan's most famous masters. This description may be from another edition of this product.
This illustrated children's book makes a great companion to Cool Melons - Turn To Frogs!: The Life And Poems Of Issa. Both are illustrated with care and understanding, and The Haiku Picturebook gives a short commentary on each poem, which aids haiku novices in understanding some of the associations that the Japanese would take for granted. As usual, I find that the kids' book takes nothing for granted in the reader's understanding, so it holds your hand a little more and makes for a more pleasant initial experience. Well done!

A trip to Japan

Reviewed by Brianne Plach (age 9) for Reader Views (4/07) Would you like to learn about Japan and a different form of poetry at the same time? If so, then the "Haiku Picturebook for Children" is for you. This book combines the Japanese words with the English, a poem, an explanation of what is meant by each haiku and a delightful illustration on each two-page spread. Kozo Shimizu is the illustrator who brings the words to life in this book. I loved looking at the pictures and see a part of Japan and their people. This is wonderful book where children will love looking at the pictures and hearing the words. This book can also be used when studying haikus in school. Take a trip to Japan just by opening the pages of this book! Note from Brianne's mother: This picture book for children will introduce children to Japan and its poetry.
Beautiful Haiku Book

This is a very nicely written haiku book with the haikus presented in English and Japanese. The Japanese presentation is done in characters as well as romanized phonetically. It is NOT however a boardbook as the description reads and it is why I gave this a 4 star rating rather than a 5. I bought this book for my 2.5 year old who still tends to not be quite as careful of printed material as one might like.
