Ah yes, I remember it well...

Haiku for Catholics has much going for it. On the top of my list are the images the haikus invoke of long ago days in Catholic school - the Scout breakfasts, playground shenanigans, Lenten promises. Next comes the sheer joy of being able to read something worthwhile in just a few minutes, and to go back and read it again, or share it with others who share your memories of Sister Faustina's curiously large mole on her chin, chapel veils, and collecting money for pagan babies. David Ash has published many books of haikus, and more to come. David, I say read 50 Ways to Leave Your Mother and give us a book of haikus on the subject of grown kids leaving the roost. How about "Haikus for Flying the Coop?"

Haiku For Life - What a gift!

What a grand little book! With wit and grace, David Ash has taken the simple haiku form and made a jewel of a book. If you are seeking laughter, there is a hearty sprinkling here - and a healthy dose of nostalgia. But what will reach out and grab you are the sudden "Ah, yes!" moments of recognized joy, faith or hope often with a distinctive wry twist. Don't expect strictly classic haiku though. While he makes a bow to structure in his forward, for Ash the form is a means to an end - not a goal in itself. Together, these "seventeen syllable gifts" create a heart warming a distillation of Catholic experience. This is one I'll come back to again and again for inspiration. A wonderful gift for the young and the "old" Catholics in your world!
