Guy D. Smith Discusses Soil Taxonomy

This supplement has been compiled from a series of articles published in Soil Survey Horizons, beginning with the Spring 1977 issue and continuing through the Summer 1982 issue, and one article from Soil Taxonomy News published in January 1982. The articles from Soil Survey Horizons are composed of questions about Soil Taxonomy from Dr. Michael Leamy, with answers by Dr. Guy D. Smith. The articles originally appeared in various volumes and issues of the New Zealand Soil News. The article from Soil Taxonomy News is a transcript of one of the last lectures given by Dr. Smith. [Soil Taxonomy News is published for the Soil Management Support Services (SMSS) by the Agronomy Department of Cornell University.] The reprint of these articles should prove useful for soil scientists and others concerned with processes and rationale used in establishing Soil Taxonomy parameters for the diagnostic horizons, climate regimes, and categories.
