The title story, originally published as The Hour of Fury, is one of a man who wants to start life over by shutting out anything from his past--by first of all changing his name, and secondly hanging up his guns. But that is a lot easier said than done when he offers to help April Surratt even though she had warned him not to help her. But Dan Smith had come to the dire and dismal conclusion: "My only usefulness is to destroy." This story is a fine action story as only Ernest Haycox could write. Better by far than anything being written and published today.
