Informally, people call the animal "guinea pig," in reference to the area where the animals are being bred.It is not clear how the animals came to be called "pigs". One theory is that guinea pigs have the same body proportions as pigs. Guinea pigs, as do pigs, have large heads compared to their bodies. The animal's name meant little sea pig in German or Indian pig in French.
