Guilty But Innocent

Martin Lencurp stood as Judge Kline pronounced him guilty of the murder of One Jane Trest. Still claiming his innocence Martin's mother bursts out in the coutroom and is taken out. With all the evidence pointing to Lencurp there is little room to find him anything but guilty. On that April afternoon Jane Trest was raped and savagely murdered by Lencurp or so the evidence seemed to point to and it was no up to Judge Kline to sentence him to either life in prison or death. But lets go back a few years : Jane and Martin knew each other in high school were even close at one point, but being Martin was from the wrong side of the tracks so to speak the two parted ways and Jane married John Trest. Martin was hired to tend their grounds and was paid handsomely for it. To even think that he or anyone would want to murder Jane was ridiculous , everyone loved her. Everyone but the murderer. Mona Lencurp was a sweet old woman who knew in her heart that her son could have never hurt Jane or anyone else. She had to find someone who would listen to her. At Captain Flap's advice she contacted a private detective named Dick Macy , a former policeman and good friend of Flap's. Though, after looking at the police report Macy found it hard to believe the man was innocent he promised Mrs. Lencurp he would look into the matter. When he arrived at Flap's office they both reviewed the case, the evidence still pointed to Lencurp but there was something about the whole case that didn't sound right. At this point we the reader starts to follow Macy's footsteps and become part of the story. We begin to imagine in our minds each of the characters and their story and then one by one they mysteriously disappear or die. The plot thickens even more when Jane Trest's body is not in her crypt! Is this the work on one person who hated Jane or is there something more! Is Jane just the beginning of a series of murders that are about to take place? Mr. Purcnel has once again written a fabulous novel that not only keeps one riveted to each chapter but presents the clues and lets us try to solve the mystery. I have read his first book The Plunge and this one is confirming my first impression that Walter Purcnel is going to be bringing us all many more mysteries. Excellent read and I highly recommend this and his first The Plunge.
