This is a mystery based on a true story of a man who was suspected of killing his wife in Illinois during the depression. The body was never found but he was convicted of the crime twice and sentenced to the chair both times. But did it really happen? Evidently during those days they didn't need a body to convict you. But the mystery was only part of the story. When I saw it was based on a true story and took place during the depression I almost didn't read it (I figured it would be, um...depressing.) Once I read the first few pages I couldn't put it down! The author is the narrator because the crime happened in her own town and to someone she knew. She was a sickly child at the time. But what a little corker she was! There was sections that had me laughing so hard, I cried. And the family was hardly "depressing". They were poor but really interesting people. I read all through the night til I finished it and I won't tell you the surprise ending because I want it to catch you by surprise too. So Elizabeth Hanley might not have been good at math when she was a child (she couldn't figure out that 7x4 and 4x7 equalled the same...) but she is one heck of a writer....
