A basic introduction to Mathematical Modelling, this book encourages the reader to participate in the investigation of a wide variety of modelling examples. These are carefully paced so that the readers can identify and develop the skills which are required for successful modelling. The examples also promote an appreciation of the enormous range of problems to which mathematical modelling skills can be usefully applied.
Excellent Review of Mathematical Modeling Techniques

I have personally found this book to be extremely helpful in understanding mathematical modeling as well as statistical models in general. The book helps define what mathematical modeling is exactly, a framework to go about developing your own models and provides ample example cases so that you truly "get" what they are trying to teach you. I found the many examples given throughout the book to be the most helpful. Given that they go over several types of modeling techniques (e.g., using difference equations, differential equations, simulation, data fitting, etc.), the examples help solidify when you might use one technique over another as well as the benefits and drawbacks of each. Furthermore, I have developed a better appreciation for certain mathematical concepts that I understood from a technical sense, but not necessarily from an intuitive or conceptual sense. Some examples that they go over include those from the physical world (e.g., parachuting, evacuating a building, etc.), the business world (e.g., profit maximization) and the "real world" (e.g., population growth, survival, etc.). Overall I highly recommend this book.
