Developing Thematic Units

Roberts' and Kellough's guide to thematic units is an incredible source of information for the development of any type of lesson unit, be it large or small. It has such a variety of samples, and I find that I am constantly referring to it as an aid in designing my instructional units. I keep this one right on my desktop for easy reference.

Roberts and Kellough Review for CUR 504

A Guide for Developing Interdisciplinary Thematic Units by Patricia Roberts and Richard Kellough (2000) is an excellent source for lesson plan development for all educators. This book should be required reading for all teachers; I only wish that I had read it earlier in my career. As a Learning Resource Specialist, I will incorporate many of the activities into professional development units. The concept of Bloom's Taxonomy will be a point of emphasis in professional development and it will support Orange County Florida's new Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Alignment Initiative. I will rely heavily on the thematic unit structure presented in this text for my own thematic units and will also adamantly utilize the chapter on the assessment of student learning.

A Guide for Developing Interdisciplinary Thematic Units

The Thematic Guide was a very useful tool in helping construct the unit for this course. It provided the appropriate information and details needed to build all the components of the unit and then evaluate it. This process was beneficial since most of the students utilizing the text are classroom teachers with experience, but working full time to improve themselves professionally. This guide provided insights into looking at the whole student and his reaction to the material.

Developing Interdisciplinary Thematic Units

A Guide for Developing Interdisciplinary Thematic Units by P. Roberts and R. Kellough Published by Merrill : Columbus 2000A Review by Ester Dupree This Thematic Guide is a very informative text. It is full of everything needed to write a successful thematic unit. The information is provided in a step-by-step format which makes it extremely easy to follow. The book also contains a format for Evaluating Lesson Plans which provide both the authors and readers of thematic units a valuable tool in assessing how well a thematic unit is written and what components are needed for it to be a successful thematic unit. There is also a Teacher and student Interaction section located in the Appendix which may be used to help teachers identify which areas of student behavior that they need to be more aware of and which areas of student behavior that they need to continue being aware of as the lessons progress. The text is a wonderful guide for teachers as they create thematic units .

The "Bible" for Developing ITU's

Patricia Roberts and Richard Kellough's book A Guide for Developing Interdisciplinary Thematic Units covers in superb detail the entire unit development process. The book's charts are its real asset. It contains lists on how to write objectives, Bloom's categories of verbs for use in objectives, and samples of what learning outcome objectives look like. The unit examples are a tremendous resource, outlining a unit on ancient Greece and one on migration to the New World. Each unit contains ten specific lesson plans. One of the most valuable parts of the book is its exercises at the end of the chapters and units. The best of these is 25 questions for evaluating your Interdisciplinary Unit plan. This book should be renamed "The Thematic Unit Bible for Teachers".
