Through a series of odd occurrences, two young men meet on Buffalo Mountain in 1971. They find in each other something strangely familiar as they share some of their life's experiences, both present and past. It's through their conversations they come to a realization that while they've crossed paths in 1971, one of them actually lived over a hundred years before the other, when he was Guarding Buffalo. "There is a commonality in humanity." While the world steadily moves forward, it's people believe they are always in a unique position of experiencing challenging struggles, sacrificial commitments, and hardships in realizing their desires and dreams. The times and the landscapes change from generation to generation, and the people of each time feel they are the bearers of unique burdens and barriers. As the Sage once said, "There's nothing new under the sun", there is a truth that we all are faced with similar hardships and choices that have challenged mankind for ages. Joseph Samuels and Jacob Applegate find themselves in a most confusing and fortunate position. One trying to figure out what happened in his past, and the other seeking to understand the choices that will determine his future. Each one faces the dark shadow of war that looms over them, and their family and friends. Can he accept the safety of an academic life when so many of his friends and family before him have put their lives on the line for their country? Both young men understand the uncertainties of life's choices, as well as the impact those choices will make on their future and their relationships with those they hold dear. Guarding Buffalo is a story filled with mystery and intrigue. The young men have seen both the good and bad this world contains. Seeing the danger and damage in a time gone bad, they want to ask...can evil be best faced head on or is there another way? Is there still hope for them beyond the ugliness they've seen in life? And if there is, what will it take to find it?The events of this story takes place during two very volatile and uncertain times in our County's history. These were times of hard choices and uncertainties for many. Jacob and Joseph "find" each other at a time when most seventeen year old boys should be making simple plans for their life. But their lives are anything but simple. So can a journey that started over a hundred years before offer any significance to a modern day young man? And can a young man who is struggling with life in 1971 offer anything helpful to someone whose last memories are in 1864?
