You can keep an orchid in a pot for many years, and it will continue to thrive and produce beautiful blooms, but every few years you will need to repot the plant. Over time, the growth medium deteriorates and fails to firmly root the plant or provide it with nutrients. Orchids are notorious for quickly outgrowing their containers, and the cachepot they were sold in may not be the best choice for their needs. (There are orchid containers available that feature more drainage holes.)
