Group Psychology: Groups, Organizations and Leadership

By: Lars Svedberg

People live in groups - and groups live within people. Organisations consist of groups, and these are not merely something we shape - they also shape who we are. In both the welfare sector and commercial organisations, there is a strong (sometimes na ve) belief in the power and potential of the team. Here, crucial decisions are expected to be made and skilled work carried out, based on the collective expertise of the group. But for this to be realistic, fine words, trendy models and good intentions are not enough.

This book provides a systematic overview of key theories on groups, organisations and leadership. It weaves together both classical and contemporary knowledge from psychology and pedagogy, as well as leadership and organisational theory, and discusses the opportunities and challenges faced by groups, organisations and their leaders. Particular emphasis is placed on the professional and social skills that are crucial for groups and organisations to function effectively. Now in its eighth edition, the book differs from other literature in the field in that it integrates knowledge about groups, organisations and leadership in a comprehensive manner.

This edition has undergone extensive revision and updating. It is aimed at anyone seeking a nuanced understanding of group dynamics, leadership and organisational issues. For many years, it has been used as course literature and in professional development within education, psychology, leadership, social work, healthcare and teacher training, as well as technical education programmes.
