Born in 1948, in the backstreets of East London, Liam O'Keefe's deprived life inevitably led him to crime and a blinkered obsession to make money, no matter how.
By 1974, when he was twenty-six, Liam had become wealthy, but when a ruthless gang leader attempts to stab him and dies accidentally in the struggle, he fears the repercussions and runs, leaving London for the first time.
Liam finds himself in rural North Devon, where, unknown and free from the baggage of his life in London, he relaxes in the picturesque surroundings, becoming so enchanted by and entwined in the lives of the quirky, indigenous residents, particularly one bubbly waitress, that he begins to re-evaluate his life.
That is, until his new Devon friends ask for his help. To help would mean his returning to London and confronting his aggressive past.
