Groaning After Full Redemption: John Wesley's Quest for Scriptural Holiness (Spirit-Filled Roots: The People and Ideas that Still Influence Today's Charismatic Christianity)

By: Joshua Nickel

What if there is more to the Christian life than we have been led to believe? What degree of personal holiness is truly attainable in this life, and how do we know if we have reached it? Is it truly possible to love God with all our heart, mind, and strength? Have we been taught to settle for less? John Wesley dedicated his life, over six decades of Christian ministry, to answering questions like these. Taking the Bible as his final authority on all things, he allowed it to guide him in his study of human religious experience. Through trial and error, controversy and failure, heartbreak and persecution, he pursued his goal with relentless energy and a singleness of purpose rarely seen in church history. Along the way, he established the Methodist movement, which would become one of the largest Christian denominations in the world, he changed the culture of his own nation, and he influenced American Christianity for generations to come. All of this was a byproduct of his one pursuit: to discover true biblical holiness, to experience it to the highest degree possible in this life, and to share his discovery with the world. This is the story of John Wesley's quest for scriptural holiness.
