GREENING UP is a picture book for early grades that emphasizes curiosity and perseverance in the face of adversity. As an aspen tree "greens up" during the summer, she befriends a wise ponderosa tree, who has weathered many seasons, and with that, wildland fires. Aspen meets a cast of characters who are native to a montane forest and part of the cycle of life in the mountainous regions of western North America, including Abert the squirrel and a great horned owl who bears similarities to the naturalist John Muir. The trees witness a wildland fire, which brings firefighters, an air tanker and ultimately new growth out of the ashes. The beautifully-illustrated artwork inspires the imagination of young readers, while teaching them about fire ecology, which is further explained in the glossary of terms.
