Old Florida Resurrected

Wonderful job of re-creating a hot and dusty old Florida before Disney World and condos took over. You can tell that the author writes from a most intimate point of view, that he really knows his subject, and you get the feeling of actually being there during those days. Excellent characters, a kinder gentler world. Denise McCarty San Jose CA

History, Passion, Sex and Murder Told With Style And Class

John Rice brings his own experience and personal knowledge of history, religion and the power of confession to life in this spell binding story of a young man possessed by his past.Told only as a "preacher" could, this story comes alive with the sounds and smells of early Florida forests, moonshine and tent revivals.A must for anyone who enjoys a really good story told by an expert.

A warm, human interest tale

This story of Ford Carwin's life is funny, sad, entertaining and believable. Mr. Rice's story captured my attention, and I couldn't wait to read the next page and the next. I enjoyed not only the focus of the story on a man's life, but also the history and geography of the times and places this story takes the reader to. I thoroughly enjoyed the story!

Very Moving

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is very provacative and I found it fascinating! A must read!

What in the world is a green rusty orange?

The charactger development in this novel is second only to the quest to discover the meaning of just what the metaphor, "green rusty oranges", is all about. The author weaves a story of love, friendship, hate and evangelical fraud over a period of time that brings the reader to a final judgement that somehow brings closure to this gripping saga of a son's quest to find his Mother and the thief that took her away from him at a young age. The reader feels the hardship of work and life in the early 1900's in the rural south and experiences the development of a simple but strong bond between two men of very different worlds. And there is love between a Father and a Mother, a Father and his Son and expecially that love betwene a Son and his Mother. The book culminates with a moving realization of awareness of self and a deepening of spirituality that only an author with credentials of a teacher, a preacher and an accomplished Appalachian storyteller can convey.
