Outstanding color photos of Vermont railroads & settings
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 16 years ago
My heading just about says it all. Nowhere have I seen such an excellent collection of color photos of the Rutland and the Central Vermont railways, including lots of steam locos. Rutland photos get 40 pages; Central Vermont photos get 60 pp. Other railroads in Vermont (Canadian Pacific, Grand Trunk, and various short lines) get the remaining pages in this 176 pp. book. There are system maps for the Rutland and CV, and a nice regional drawing with major route features, but no local/area maps or track plans. The appeal of the photos is trains and settings (scenery as well as railroad and other structures), rather than close-ups of human activities. As with so many railroad photos, you might think that people play little or no role: a few tiny heads seen in loco cabs, or the occasional small figure off to the side of a train. Otherwise, the machines seem to run themselves, for their own obscure purposes. In this vein, the photographers (at least photos selected by Jones) do not match the level of sensitivity of (e.g.) Philip Hastings; the latter's photos capture emotions and more personal aspects of New England (and other) railroading, but are in black-and-white.
