Nearly 30 years after the Earth Summit, we had become aware of the challenges emerging on a planetary scale, from climate change to the disappearance of species to desertification and soil degradation. Today, many of these concerns, which seemed so far away, are becoming a reality, with implications not only for achieving the Millennium Development Goals, but also threatening the very ability of almost seven billion people (nine billion by 2050) to live. Since then, a number of global and regional meetings have been held, giving the world a vision of a sustainable future. But this will only be possible if the environmental and social pillars of sustainable development are treated on an equal footing with the economic pillar.
