Good Overview Of General Grant

While "Grant: The Man Who Won The Civil War" briefly covers Grant's life, the focus is on the Civil War years. Among the areas covered include: 1. Early years. 2. Strong marriage to his beloved Julia Dent. 3. Mexican War service. 4. Pre-Civil War business failures. 5. Early Civil War service and his steady ascent to Commander of Union Armies. 6. Post-Civil War years (presidency, writing memoirs to provide for his family after he would die of cancer). Neillands covers the obstacles Grant faced during the Civil War (mainly the obstacles placed before him by jealous superiors and distrusting policitians). However, fortunately for the nation, Grant had the complete backing of President Lincoln who finally found the general who would coordinate the vast Union resources to eventually win the war. The book flows freely and is an enjoyable read. There were some errors however. Neillands states that General James Longstreet of the Confederate Army was wounded by Union troops at the Battle of the Wilderness. My understanding has always been that Longstreet was accidentally wounded by his own troops, much like Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson was a year earlier at the nearby Battle of Chancellorsville. Still, the book is a good overview of Grant's life. If you are looking for something with more depth and detail, I recommend "Grant" by Jean Smith. Recommended. Read and enjoy.

A welcome addition to library Civil War collections

Grant: The Man Who Won The Civil War by British military historian Robin Neillands is the true story of Ulysses S. Grant, an undistinguished Army officer who earned his place in history by becoming commander-in-chief of the Union Armies and bringing the Civil War to an end with the Confederacy's defeat. Examining the qualities that enabled Grant to succeed where so many before him had failed - such as picking skilled and loyal subordinates and standing by them, and focusing resolutely upon the right aim or object - Grant: The Man Who Won The Civil War is a resounding, well-researched narrative history, distinguished by its insight into the external and internal forces that motivated a true leader. A welcome addition to library Civil War collections.
