wonderful book for all ages

My 3-year old daughter likes this book a lot and so do I, both the pictures and the simple yet affecting story. It is basically a series of scenes of the little girl playing with her granpa, each accompanied with just a few words spoken, such as a scene where she is playinmg with mudcakes and granpa says "'This is a lovely chocolate ice cream.'to which she says 'It's not chocolate, it's strawberry.'" or another scene--that resonates only too well with real life--where granpa seems peeved and someone, perhaps the girl's mother off-stage, says "That was not a nice thing to say to granpa." And these scenes are interspersed with scenes of imagination or wistful memory, in a playful and clever way. The illustrations are beautiful, to our eyes anyway; they are perhaps somewhat rough or sketchy, but the author's technique is always fresh, engaging and colorful. (We have 6 or 7 of his books now, this one being the favorite.) The book is quite moving, as you will see. Our 3-year old is delighted with every page of the book, but also seems to, you know, sort of get the deeper drift of it. An excellent book, entertaining, subtle, moving.
