Excellent book -It actually formed my love of ethnobotany as a subject, and collecting rare and unusual ingredients when I first read this at 5.I remember well the formulas and recipes using things like gum tragacanth, gum elemi, and other exotic sounding medicinals and hard-to-find ingredients like isinglass ( wine making suppliers carry it!).Equally fascinating are the recipes for foods taken to recoup from illnesses- the blancmange with Irish moss, the custard, the vanilla scented things wafting through my room as I experimented making the things is as delightful a memory as Mai Thomas' recollections of her grandmother's apothecary cupboard and the things therein. For a good, memorable addition to ones non-fiction library in areas from botany to Wicca, and herbal remedies, this book is a treasure overlooked for years. at 1 cent US, its a steal in a hardcover edition. Reading it will take a couple of hours and the knowledge, valuableGum Tragacanth - 2.7 oz it is, will last a lifetime.
