Grandma Louly's grass heads

Sarah Shalev grew up in a big family in Kfar Shalem, near Tel Aviv, in a small and modest home, surrounded by stone walls, that had a small garden filled with grass and flowers out front. She went on to study teaching and got higher degrees in art, psychology, and education.

Today, she lives in Haifa in a high-rise building, and that is where her children grew up. She always kept her childhood home close to her heart, especially the grass and flowers it had. This sparked her love of grass dolls. Her love for this craft was infectious, and she shared it with her students and her grandchildren, who gladly helped her make each unique grass doll.

Sarah Shalev's doll making technique has many advantages: it encourages creativity in children, can be repeated to make an endless supply of new and different dolls, it encourages intergenerational bonding between parents, grandparents, teachers, and children, all the while making use of household items that would otherwise be thrown away, like plastic cups, bottles, and bottle caps, other plastic scraps, and seeds found in the kitchen.
