"Grains of Sand" is the story of Annanias Sand (1843-1923) and his wife Marit Andersdatter (1849-1901) and their children. The family emigrated from Norway in 1881, homesteading in Timberland, Wisconsin. Annanias Sand was a tall man of six feet four inches; he was a farmer, a circuit-riding minister, and he sold religious books and tracts. He was one of the founding members of the Timberland Lutheran Church and a meeting was held in his home when they decided to build the Timberland schoolhouse. He was described by the 1997 minister of the Timberland Lutheran Church as "somewhat of a serious man, a spiritual man, and a lay pastor."The book also features a chapter on each child: Kjersten Oline Sand and Edward Rylander; Anna Petrine Sand; Paul Andres Sand(s) and Minda Anete Vang; Odin Sand(s) and Katherine; Anna Marie Sand and Swan Christian Johnson; Anthon Sand; Olaf Marius Sand(s) and Mathilda S. Ulven; Martin Sand; Martine Sand and Lewis H. Huebotter and Ole Andrew Johansen; and Christine Sand and George Dornberger. The last chapter is the story of Martine Sand's husband Ole Andreas Johansen (1866-1945), a renowned ship's captain at the turn of the century. He was one of the best known skippers on the west coast, traveling westward to Nome, Alaska and points further on. He was known for his "skill and daring." "Grains of Sand" is filled with genealogy, family stories, and photos and was compiled by Betty Dornberger Westby with the help of her Sand cousins.
