The novel explores the conflicts women in the 1960s and 1970s faced balancing ambition and personal life. Paulie's ambivalence about the choices she has made is leavened by humor, as she reflects on her refusal to ignore her talent, her love of dance, and the effect her ambition has on her relationship with her husband, fellow dancer Alfred Klaski, and their daughter. Paulie's story is timely as many women today still struggle with maintaining an equilibrium in their lives, and the conflict between ambition and personal happiness.
