I generally don't like fiction as it seems a waste of time, but I bought this because the cover looked like it contained sweet stories and I occassionally want a rainy day read. I not only wasn't disappointed, I was incredibly surprised at how engrossed I was in the stories! The third novel, The Girl from Montana, surprised me the most because I couldn't put the book down it was so well written! I thought I'd like it the least because it is about a girl raised in the wilderness of Montana who heads east to Penn. after her family slowly dies off. Doesn't sound like much but I was riveted. My heart was pounding at one time when she was trying to escape her brother's murderer on a lonely mountain trail. I haven't been this engrossed in fiction in a long time. The first novel is Aunt Crete's Emancipation and it is a charming short story about a sweet older lady who has Cinderella-like circumstances and how she is set free. A quick read that leaves a smile on your face. The second novel, A Daily Rate, is about a woman who moves to the city, inherits some money and buys the boardinghouse she's living in, and how her and her aunt's choices help everyone in the boardinghouse. It was VERY encouraging in helping me to remember that the Lord provides enough for my daily rate as well, which is the moral of this story, and how our choices can affect others for the better. My book also had a fourth story by Grace Livingston Hill's aunt, Isabella Alden (1841-1930), also a prolific author. This was called Mara and was very interesting. To say anything more would give the plot away, but know IA used her writing to teach lessons espoused by her minister husband. Very well written. The collection is 478 pages long. I didn't think, when I bought it, that I would ever finish the book (or even begin it!), but I finished in less than a week it was so good. I highly recommend this collection.
