Graceful, elegant reporting of nearly forgotten global event

In just a few years, the world has forgotten the words Mikhail Gorbachev, detente, Glasnost, and Perestroika. This elegant, episodic little book captures the brief period that preceded the collapse of America's most feared and powerful adversary, the Soviet Empire. This is not an academic historical or political work for students and knowledgeable historians. Rather, it is a personal account that readers who would love to know more about life behind the mysterious Iron curtain, without having to take college courses. Author has all the observational skills of an experienced journalist and lets us see the tanks pouring down the streets of Moscow through his eyes. Enjoyed it immensely.
