Goodnight Irene

By James Scott Byrnside

Chicago, 1927. Private detective Rowan Manory has lost his confidence. A devastating case has left the once-renowned investigator haunted by failure, struggling with panic attacks, and wondering whether his career has come to an end.

Then a curious letter arrives.

Wealthy businessman Robert Lasciva claims he has received a death threat predicting he will be murdered during his birthday celebration-and that the killer will be one of his own guests. For an enormous fee, Manory agrees to travel to an isolated Mississippi estate where family members, servants, and old acquaintances gather beneath one roof.

Before the weekend is over, the impossible begins.

A brutal murder leaves behind baffling physical evidence. Secret passages, ghostly sounds, long-buried crimes, and decades-old lies turn Lasciva Manor into a labyrinth of deception where every clue seems to contradict the last. As bodies accumulate and the outside world becomes increasingly unreachable, Manory finds himself trapped in a race against a ruthless killer while confronting the demons that threaten to destroy him from within.

Dark, atmospheric, and filled with classic fair-play clues, Goodnight Irene is a traditional detective novel in the spirit of the Golden Age-combining impossible crimes, Gothic suspense, and a meticulously constructed mystery that challenges readers to solve the case alongside the detective.
