1992: Eastern Europe after the collapse of the Soviet Empire was a place in chaos, where drugs paid the bills and guns made the rules. Hyperinflation meant salaries doubled every month: you could buy a kilo of meat with a kilo of roubles. There was almost no food to buy in the supermarkets but you were offered plutonium and surplus Soviet jetfighters to buy in the hard currency bars where westerners rubbed shoulders with spies, smugglers and prostitutes. After stability and oppression, whole societies were cracking apart. Fast forward to 2017: one day the narrator's uncle vanishes from his well-paid job and happy family, leaving behind fragments of articles, letters and book chapters from his time as a journalist covering that period in Eastern Europe's history, including the war in Yugoslavia. The author pieces together a chronicle of romantic and adventures to see whether he can find clues to his uncle's disappearance. What trauma did he incur in exploring the aftermath of Communist societies. Did he find out the mystery of Communism itself? Or was it a personal trauma working itself out?
